Time Carnage - A KGK Review

In this bizarre take on a first person shooter, developed and published by Wales Interactive, you will be warped to the killing fields of the 4th Millennium where zombies and rabid mole rats roam the earth, or to the Mesozoic Era where giant flies, vicious raptors and angry triceratops are out for blood. Safe from the onslaught on your shielded warp platform, you will blast your way through 5 waves of ever increasing enemies.

This one is a bit odd; while you can move around in a full 360 view, you cannot move outside of the warp platform, which is only a few feet across. On the warp platform is a wave tracker, a shield bar, and your point totals for the level. Along with the HUD are your gun pedestals, where you will alternate between your guns and have your magazines reloaded. You get to select up to 4 different weapons at a time to swap between during the round. Also, each hand has a fire button so the guns can be fired independently.

The Campaign consists of 4 different worlds each with its own theme and set of enemies. Each world consists of 4 different areas. And, lastly, each area consists of 5 waves. So one round can last anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. There are 3 difficulties to choose from and the only noticeable difference being the amount of enemies that spawn per wave.

There is also a Challenge mode where you can unlock perks that can be used in arcade mode to modify the gameplay by adding handicaps or buffs. Some of these include ragdoll physics on kills, laser sights, or no shields. During the challenges you will have to attain a certain number of kills to unlock bronze, silver, or gold rewards. There are a total of 10 challenge modes to complete.

The last mode is Arcade mode which allows you to play any level you want with any type of enemies. You can also make use of all your perks and handicaps to create a new experience. All the weapons you’ve unlocked are available to you.

Overall this game was okay, not great, but not the worst—just meh. The concept was interesting but by the time I was on world 3 I just found myself bored. That’s not to say the game has no redeeming qualities. The shooting and aiming mechanics work well and the reloading dock is a cool concept, but being limited to the small area of movement is kind of lame. The story could have worked in the warp platform but therein lies the other problem, there is no story, just combat…in a circle….with zombies, raptors, robots and skeletons. Oh, and a black hole launcher; that’s pretty cool.
