Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 is a spectacular follow-up to the original, with a campaign that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. But where it really hits its stride is in the cooperative Operations mode.
Now, I’ve always been a bit sceptical when people say, “It’s better in co-op.” I mean, of course, things are more fun with friends, right? But trust me, Space Marine 2 is a game that genuinely shines when you’ve got a buddy or two by your side. The campaign is great on its own, but when you dive into the chaotic, class-based Operations, that’s when the game truly comes alive.
Playing through the campaign solo is still a blast—don’t get me wrong. The story follows Ultramarine Titus, who’s been demoted to Lieutenant after some drama in the first game. You’ll lead a squad of marines in massive battles across Imperial planets, taking on the terrifying Tyranid hordes. The game’s visuals are stunning, with epic battles in gothic Hive Cities and sprawling battlefields that really make the 40k universe come to life. The combat is a mix of brutal melee and ranged attacks, and the executions? Let’s just say they’re as gory as you’d expect from a 40k game.
But it’s in co-op where Space Marine 2 really stands out. The Operations mode offers six unique missions where you and your friends take on specific classes of Space Marines, each with their own abilities. The action is intense, the teamwork is crucial, and the swarms of Tyranids never stop coming. It’s like Left 4 Dead, but with more armor, bigger guns, and way more aliens to smash.
Sure, there are a few hiccups—some weapons could hit harder, and the campaign’s story could dig a bit deeper—but overall, Space Marine 2 is a solid entry in the series. If you’re a fan of the 40k universe, or just love a good action game with friends, this one’s definitely worth your time. Grab a few buddies, gear up, and get ready to kick some serious alien butt!
Played on Xbox Series X I found the game was far superior in performance mode and whilst stunning in Graphics mode it is noticeably slower, this is obviously a machine limitation issue and not the games’ fault. Owners of suitably meaty PCs will be able to enjoy this game in much higher fidelity and higher frame rates.
Overall stunning and great fun.
