The Long Reach - A KGK Review

The long reach is a side scrolling suspenseful horror game published by Merge Games and developed by Painted Black Games. The story opens with a man-child, Calvin, making his way to the corner store to buy some jellies. The story quickly gets dark as you witness a gruesome killing and are dropped into the shoes of local scientist and start progressing through their story, slowly piecing together what has happened.

With the perfect amount of suspense, dark humour sprinkled with just a pinch of nihilism, this tale will have you on the edge of your seat, gripped with intrigue from start to finish. Which is convenient because this can be completed in one sitting.

The game play is typical of the 2D puzzle genre, search each room for the highlighted item, pick up the item that surely must be junk… nope its needed for the next puzzle, try all the items in your inventory on all the highlighted spots to find what goes where.

The puzzles themselves are not overly challenging and can be solved with a little intuition. A few jump scares, dramatic musical stings, and run-ins with enemies will make sure you are nice and attentive to the story, which is quite good and deserves a few hours of your time.

Dimly light corridors, flickering lights, ominous music that fades into whispers, then nearly gives you a heart attack as it swells into a suspenseful sting, all paint the dark and dreary portrait of The Long Reach. Move in and out of reality at the blink of an eye as you drift from street view to a burning hellscape, where people hallucinate their greatest fears as if trapped in a dream or nightmare, unable to wake to reality.

Overview I really enjoyed my time with this game and would love to play more games like it. I would have liked a few more puzzles and a more fleshed out story, but as a whole it was great. I would recommend it to fans of the thriller/puzzle genre. The price is a bit high for the amount of content but would make a great purchase when on sale. Hopefully we get more titles like this in the future.
